In the 70’s, a legendary Sabahan artist named JOHN GAISAH, a Dusun singer, lifted up the Sabahan music industry. He popularised the Sumazau beat around the state on a scale that has never been seen before . He composed a treasure trove of sumazau songs which captured the hearts of almost all Sabahan people.
In the 80’s, he passed away, but his work lived on until today and still has the power to captivate the hearts of the new, young generation of today who was moved to take the bold steps to improvised some of his more popular songs and turned them into a more upbeat and modern sound. People are still using the beat that he created. He died at a young age of 26 years but his works endure and stood the test of time. Those were what made John Gaisah a legend.
John is still remembered as the greatest singer in Sabah before the arrival of the other fantastic singer called FRANCIS LANDONG. John was called the TOM JONES of Sabah simply because he could imitate 100% the voice of that powerful-voiced singer. In his own right, John’s voice is inimitable. No one ever or since him had equal his super-high pitch, slightly husky and at the same time silky vocal.
